Raku Workshop

Pick your date in the drop down!

Get ready to play with fire and come learn about the Raku! This is a firing process that is what we like to call "fast and dirty." And the best part? You get to leave with finished pieces! The event will run on your chosen date beginning at 1pm until all pieces have been fired.

What you will need: Up to three pieces that have already been bisque fired and are no larger than 6 inches in diameter. This firing will NOT produce food safe or functional ware. These pieces will be decorative only as the clay remains porous (more will be revealed during the workshop). We provide gloves but please bring a long sleeve cotton shirt (like a flannel or button up). Close toed shoes, ideally leather and long Pants (you could bring a change of clothes).

Clay for the firing: We recommend making pieces from a heavily grogged clay.-Participants may purchase clay from us that we make for this process ($3.00 per 1 lb, buy as much or as little as you want), or-You may purchase clay elsewhere, ideally Raku clay so it can handle the thermal shock, if you want to use any other type of clay that's okay too. HOWEVER keep in mind thermal shock and cracking are possibilities.

Glazing: There will be time to glaze your pieces when the workshop begins. We have 6 glazes made in house for everyone to try out.

Firing: We will fire in rounds, once we have the kiln cranking we could be turning over loads every 15-25 min. We will work as a team when moving work to combustible materials. Feel free to bring snacks!

Since the whole process of Raku revolves around thermal shocking pieces, we do not guarantee success. But we do guarantee a fun afternoon with Fire and Fun! All pieces will go home with you at the end of the firing.
